We also added Cao Ren and Yu Jin for Cao Cao. Different characters are available for him in each start date, but they’re all present in 200 CE – whether within Yuan Shao’s faction, or as one of his vassals. Yuan Shao’s a prominent figure in most of our chapters – and traditionally performs very well when controlled by the AI – so fleshing out his roster was a big priority for us. The fearsome duo of Wen Chou and Yan Liang have been added for Yuan Shao, as well as Zhang He, Lady Zhen, Yuan Tan, and Yuan Shang. This has been on the wish list for many players, so it’s great to expand his presence in this manner. While he’s not initially a character on the map, it’s now possible to restore the Han Empire and reinstate him as the rightful ruler. This means he has new unique character art, and a new skill tree that better fits a non-deployable character. We wanted the emperor (Liu Xie) to play a bigger role in this campaign, so we gave him the full main character treatment. The emperor has also come of age by this date, which means he gets to play a more prominent role in the narrative.ĬA: What new characters will Fates Divided introduce? This means we’ve got wars brewing on multiple fronts, and players can’t necessarily send all their armies together in a single doomstack.

Cao Cao’s secured more than 30 regions, and many other warlords have over a dozen regions. Unlike our other Chapter Packs, we’ve got some big factions from the first turn. Lü Bu’s train of betrayal has finally been halted, and Sun Ce’s been rapidly uniting the southlands. Liu Bei’s been fighting against anyone he sees as a tyrant – which, unfortunately, seems to be mostly everyone.

Yuan Shao seized control of the north, then turned around to march on his childhood friend. Cao Cao has taken control of the emperor, relocated him to his capital in Xuchang, and has unified most of central China. We also overhauled some of the existing campaign features, such as the faction council.ĬA: What was happening in the Three Kingdoms in 200 CE (the new Fates Divided start date)?Ĭraig Kirby: All the tension that was building up over the last decade has finally reached a tipping point, and huge wars are breaking out across most of China. First of all, could you please introduce yourself?Ĭraig Kirby: Hello! I’m Craig Kirby, senior designer on the Total War: THREE KINGDOMS team, and the design lead for patch 1.7.0 and Fates Divided.Ĭraig Kirby: Fates Divided is the new Chapter Pack for Total War: THREE KINGDOMS, showcasing the conflict between Cao Cao and Yuan Shao in 200 CE. He did eventually become the “King of Wei” a vassal monarch of the state of Cao Wei. This mission would bring him into conflict with many of the great warlords of the age in a series of bloody wars. Thus began his efforts to unify China under his banner. After the fall of Dong Zhuo, Cao Cao took control of the young emperor, whom many subsequently regarded as his puppet.

After that, he was an ally of Dong Zhuo, though he would eventually turn on the corrupt tyrant and join Yuan Shao’s coalition a partnership which was depicted in Cao Cao’s Total War character trailer. The real Cao Cao began his career, like so many other heroes of the era, fighting against the Yellow Turban Rebellion. According to Creative Assembly, his first major dilemma will be whether to take revenge on Tao Qian the man who may be responsible for the death of his father, Cao Song.

He begins in Chen commandery, close to the centre of the map. As such, he will likely start with plenty of enemies. However, his campaign begins at a time when the tyrant Dong Zhuo has named him an enemy of the state. Cao Cao begins his campaign with the support of generals Xiahou Dun and Xiahou Yuan both very valuable assets.
